Eating Your Way To Younger -Healthier Skin
There are so many choices to make when you go to the grocery store. You read magazines, listen to the TV, but it is not easy to make health food choices. The grocery store isles are jammed packed with sweet treats, prepackaged foods, chips, and frozen meals. So, where do you start. If you are like me, I start in the back of the store, and make my way forward. The produce is usually right in the front of the store, and I don’t want to put those tender items in my basket first. However, that is exactly what you should be doing!
The Produce Isle
The produce isle is stacked high with colorful greens, blues, reds, yellows, reds, and other colorful fruits and vegetables. We often go to the grocery store with a recipe list, or the desire to buy healthier choices for our families, but we don’t always succeed once we hit the prepackaged foods. What we actually buy to put our refrigerator or pantries may make it impossible to adhere to a healthy diet plan.
According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans a healthy diet plan should include:
- whole grains, and
- fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products
- lean meats
How Sugar Ages Your Skin
Many people believe that fruit is a healthy choice, and they juice bags of oranges, apples and berries believing they are reproving their skin with great natural sweet nutrients, but sweet is the key words. Too much sugar whether it be from fruits, a packet or a bowl is not good for your skin. Sugar enters your body’s cells in a process called glycation. This process allows cells in your bloodstream to attach themselves to proteins which begins to break down your natural collagen. When your collagen breaks down, your skin begins to sag, becomes dryer and starts to wrinkle.
If you eat mostly a sugar diet it will affect how you produce collagen, and how resistant your will be to wrinkling. There are different types of collagen: Types I, II, and III, with type III being the best most stable and longest lasting collagen type.
Eating a diet high in sugar also shuts down your body’s natural antioxidant enzymes, and this will leave your skin more vulnerable to sun, and the long term damage.

Foods For Healthy Skin
- Fresh fruits ―Go beyond the apples, pear or bananas. There are so many great fruit choices. If you afraid to buy them in the store, go to your local farmers market, and ask for a sample. You just might find a new favorite. Go Try out a mango, pineapple, papaya, kiwi, and different pears of all shapes, sizes and colors. When buying canned fruits look for no sugar added or low sugar.
- Fresh vegetables ―Vegetables can be a great choice when you want to improve the health of your skin. You can grill, steam, bake, microwave, and eat them raw too. Try not to drown them in butter, oils, sauces, creams, and dips. Spinach,kale, lettuces, squash, beets, and more make the mose delicious in salads.
- Calcium-rich foods ―Calcium is important for the health of your bones, teeth and bodily organs, including the skin. It helps regulate many of the necessary functions of the skin. Not getting enough calcium in the diet can prevent your skin from regenerating properly, which can lead to dry, thin and fragile skin. according to the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) calcium can also help prevent skin cancers from forming, but helping skin regulate melanin in the cells.
- Lean Meats – Eating lean meats once or twice a week can help skin skin heal and repair itself.
- Beans & Legumes– These are biotin rich which promotes healthier, skin, hair and nails.
